SANDAHL WATCHES
Care & Service
Thoughtful care for a watch made to be worn. Practical guidance on daily use, safe storage, water resistance and service.
For winding and setting instructions, visit the SANDAHL calibre guides.
EVERYDAY CARE
After wearing your watch, wipe away moisture, perspiration and dust with a clean, soft cloth. For light marks, use a slightly damp cloth and dry gently.
For a stainless-steel case and metal bracelet, a little mild soapy water and a very soft brush may be used when the watch is in good condition, its water resistance has been maintained and the crown is fully secured. Remove soap with fresh water and dry thoroughly. Keep leather straps dry.
Avoid abrasive cloths, metal polish and ultrasonic cleaning of the complete watch. If the crystal, crown or case is damaged, or you are unsure about the seals, use a dry cloth and contact SANDAHL before wet cleaning.
For the AEREUS bronze case, see “How should I care for the bronze case of AEREUS?” under STRAPS, BRACELETS & MATERIALS below. The stainless-steel cleaning advice above is not a patina-removal method for bronze.
Keep hard jewellery on the other wrist. A soft desk mat can reduce contact between the clasp or bracelet and a desk or laptop. Put the watch on and take it off over a bed, sofa or another soft surface where practical.
Sapphire is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof. Grit can also mark surface coatings, the bezel and polished metal. Use a clean cloth and avoid rubbing grit across the watch.
Protect the watch from strong impacts, solvents, cleaning chemicals, perfume and cosmetics. Avoid saunas, hot baths and abrupt temperature changes. Remove the watch for activities involving heavy shocks or repeated impacts.
If the watch receives a substantial knock, have its condition and water resistance assessed before further use in water.
RESTING & STORING YOUR WATCH
Use a clean, soft watch tray, pad or folded cloth. Keep the crown free of pressure and prevent the bracelet or clasp from touching the case, caseback or crystal.
Dial-up on a suitable cushion is a good option. If the bracelet folds beneath the watch, place a soft cloth between it and the caseback. Resting the watch on its side with the crown uppermost is also possible on a soft surface, provided it is stable. Avoid putting the crystal directly against a hard surface.
Use a separate, padded compartment or a secure watch pouch or roll. Support the watch so that the bracelet cannot rub against the case, and keep it away from loose jewellery, keys and other hard objects.
Store the watch clean and dry, away from direct heat and strong magnets. Avoid pouches or closures that press a magnet directly against the watch.
WATER RESISTANCE
Water-resistance markings describe a pressure rating. In watch terminology, 10 ATM corresponds approximately to 100 metres, 20 ATM to 200 metres and 50 ATM to 500 metres.
Always follow the rating and intended-use guidance for your SANDAHL model. A depth marking alone is not a complete statement of suitability for every diving activity, and water resistance depends on the condition of the case, crystal, crown and seals. Leather straps must be kept out of water even when the watch case is water-resistant.
SANDAHL does not claim ISO water-resistance certification. Our individual pressure checks and model type tests are explained in the FAQ.
Before contact with water, check that the crown is fully closed and, where fitted, properly screwed down. Never pull out, turn or unscrew the crown while the watch is wet or submerged.
After sea swimming, gently remove salt with fresh water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid a forceful jet directed at the crown. If the crown does not secure normally or the watch is damaged, keep it out of water and contact SANDAHL.
Water resistance is not permanent. For watches used frequently in water, we recommend a pressure test once a year. A qualified local watchmaker or retailer with suitable equipment can carry out the test.
As preventive maintenance, we recommend inspection and, where necessary, replacement of seals and O-rings, with appropriate lubrication of threaded components, approximately every five years. Use and condition may justify earlier attention. These are maintenance recommendations, not automatic conditions that remove your statutory rights.
Stop using the watch in water and contact SANDAHL promptly. Persistent misting or droplets inside the crystal need assessment. Do not try to open the case or dry the movement with a hair dryer or other heat source.
YOUR AUTOMATIC WATCH
A moving weight inside the watch, called the rotor, turns with the movement of your wrist. Through the winding mechanism it stores energy in the mainspring. The spring then releases that energy gradually to power the hands. No battery is required.
Self-winding depends on your activity. Wearing the watch for a short time, or spending much of the day still, may not replenish all the energy used. Manual winding provides a starting charge when needed; follow the guide for your calibre.
A watch stops when its stored energy, or power reserve, runs out. That is normal after it has been left unworn. Follow your calibre guide to restart it, then set the time and the date if your watch displays one.
You do not need to keep it running solely because it is in storage. If it repeatedly stops despite appropriate winding and regular wear, contact SANDAHL. Do not shake it forcefully to try to restart it.
Choose the guide for the calibre fitted to your watch:
- SC100 — Seiko / TMI NH35: ORNATUS, CENTURION and SUITS; date-capable movement.
- SC110 — Seiko / TMI NH38: ACHROMATIC; no date mechanism.
- SC200 — HKPT PT5000: SHALLOW and AEREUS; date-capable movement, with no date window in these watches.
SHALLOW and AEREUS owners: skip date setting. Use the outer time-setting position. SC110 has only one pulled-out setting position, for the time.
Strong magnets can affect a mechanical watch and cause it to gain or lose time. Avoid resting it directly against magnetic clasps, speakers or magnetic charging accessories.
If a marked change in timekeeping follows magnetic exposure, contact SANDAHL or a qualified watchmaker for assessment and, if needed, demagnetisation. Moving the watch away from the magnet may not remove the residual magnetism.
Mechanical timekeeping varies with position, temperature, activity and the amount of energy stored in the mainspring. Every SANDAHL watch is regulated and tested before delivery, and its supplied timegrapher report records the measured performance at that test.
The report is a test record, not a promise of the same rate in every wearing condition. If you notice a persistent change, note the gain or loss over several days and contact SANDAHL.
STRAPS, BRACELETS & MATERIALS
Keep leather straps away from immersion, prolonged moisture and direct heat. Wipe them gently with a soft cloth and let them dry naturally if damp. Inspect the strap, stitching and attachment points regularly.
Rubber straps can be cleaned gently with fresh water and a little mild soap, then rinsed and dried. Avoid solvents and harsh cleaning products. If the strap is still fitted, follow the watch's water-resistance precautions. Replace a strap that is cracked, torn or no longer secure.
Have bracelet sizing and spring-bar work carried out with suitable tools by someone familiar with the fitting. Retain removed links. Periodically check that the clasp closes securely and that the bracelet, screws, pins and spring bars are secure.
If an attachment becomes loose, stop wearing the watch until it has been checked. Forcing an unsuitable tool can damage the bracelet or case.
The CuSn8 bronze case develops a patina as its surface reacts with air, moisture and use. Changes in colour are a natural characteristic of bronze.
Salt water accelerates the oxidation of bronze and can cause green surface discolouration. After every swim, gently rinse the watch with fresh water, especially after exposure to the sea, then dry it with a clean, soft cloth. Avoid directing a forceful jet at the crown.
Follow the water-resistance guidance for your watch. The crown must be fully closed and screwed down before entering the water or rinsing; do not operate it while the watch is wet. If the case, crystal, crown or seals are damaged, keep the watch out of water and contact SANDAHL.
Clean gently and dry after use. Avoid abrasive polishing and chemical patina-removal treatments unless SANDAHL has advised a suitable method for your watch. Contact us if you would like guidance on changing or restoring its surface appearance.
SERVICE & SUPPORT
As a general guideline, we recommend having the watch's condition and performance assessed after approximately 3–5 years. The appropriate action depends on the calibre, use and condition. We may recommend servicing or, where more practical and economical, replacement of the movement.
Seek advice sooner if timekeeping changes significantly, the crown feels abnormal, the watch stops repeatedly despite appropriate winding, or moisture appears inside the crystal.
Always contact SANDAHL before sending your watch for warranty assessment or service. We will discuss the issue with you and provide the appropriate instructions for your case, including shipping-label arrangements, tracking, insurance and any customs documents required for shipments from outside the EU.
